NIKONOV submarine in kit
Assemble the wooden model of the world's first submarine dating from 1720
Russia, in 1718. Peter I received a request from a certain Efim Nikonov Prokopyevich, working in the shipyard, who claimed to be able to create a ship that would approach enemy ships from underwater and shoot them with cannons. The Tsar of Russia, known to be a fan of innovation, approved the idea. The model was created, capable of everything he had promised Nikonov, and in the middle of 1720 was declared the first submarine in the world.
It was a wooden barrel of 6 by 2 meters, equipped with a snaruzhi pump and a pair of lead plates pierced with many tiny holes, responsible for immersion and emersion. The cannons replaced the opening through which the diver had to go out and pierce the bottom of the enemy hulls. After 4 years of construction and adaptations, the submarine was launched. Unfortunately, during its dive, its structure was damaged and the inventor had to be brought back up urgently. Peter I ordered to reinforce the structure with iron straps and to provide the master builder with all the necessary materials. Unfortunately, after the king's death in 1725, the funding for the project stopped. As a result, Prokopyevich Yefim Nikonov was demoted and exiled to the remote Admiralty as an ordinary worker.
