The Bell UH-1 Iroquois, nicknamed «Huey», was an American manoeuvre and assault helicopter, whose prototype made its first flight on October 22, 1956. More than 16,000 civilian and military specimens were produced and exported to more than 70 countries; it was developed in many versions, some still flying in 2023.
Possessing a semi-monocoque fuselage made of light alloy, all variants of the Huey (except the UH-1Y) have two bipal rotors. The main rotor, semi-rigid, is surmounted by two stabilizer bars arranged at a right angle to the blades. Two small hydraulically operated depth surfaces are attached to the tail boom.
The Vietnam War saw for the first time the helicopter take a prominent place in the course of military operations. The Huey, by the variety of roles entrusted to him and his omnipresence, became practically a symbol of this conflict. The United States Army Aviation Branch UH-1s flew 9,713,762 hours between October 1966 and 1973.
