The Mirage 2000N is a version of the Mirage 2000 specially developed for nuclear attacks. Originally equipped with the ASMP nuclear missile, it now carries the improved ASMPA version and is part of the French strategic air force. The Mirage 2000N plays a decisive role in French nuclear deterrence. Its counterpart for conventional attacks is the Mirage 2000D, a two-seat version optimized for conventional air-to-ground attacks in all weather conditions.

The Mirage 2000D, a derivative of the Mirage 2000N, was developed in the late 1980s in response to delays in the Dassault Rafale program and was originally designated Mirage 2000N' (Mirage 2000N prime). The aircraft are based at Nancy-Ochey airbase and are distributed across several squadrons: Fighter Squadron 1/3 Navarre, Fighter Squadron 2/3 Champagne, Fighter Squadron 3/3 Ardennes and Training Squadron Mirage 2000D 4/3 Argonne. All of these squadrons are subordinate to the 3rd Fighter Wing. On December 31, 2012, 78 Mirage 2000Ds were in service; on October 15, 2015, 71 were still in service.
