The HMS Warrior was the first British armoured warship. The first warship of this kind was the French La Gloire, put into service by the French armada in 1859, leading the British armada to build them as well.
These ships are called ironclad, and they were frigates that ran on steam and which were protected by steel and iron armour plates.
