Fast, with shallow draft, highly maneuverable, and able to use oars in calm weather, they were used by pirates to plunder merchant ships.
Their slender and graceful shape resembles that of a galley, with three masts rigged with lateen sails and armed with light cannons and swivel guns.
The Royal Navy, in order to combat the corsairs using their own tactics, had some built by Majorcan experts in these ships.
They were used successfully and lasted until the First Empire, operated by French corsairs.
The Museum of the Navy in PARIS has several models of Xebecs, with various riggings: lateen, mystic, and "à pible."
The wooden model to be built by MANTUA:
A direct descendant of the 12th-century Greek Dromon, the Xebec, reproduced here, explains how its speed allowed France to defeat the Saracens.
Construction using frames and double planking, laser-cut pieces. Rigging included in the box.
Suitable for a beginner modeler.
