The Américo Vespucci is a famous Italian training ship, mainly used by the Italian Navy to train naval officers. It is named after Amerigo Vespucci, a 15th-century Italian navigator who is famous for his voyages of exploration to South America. The ship is renowned for its beauty and elegance, as well as for its role in promoting Italian maritime history and culture around the world.

Its architect was Colonel Francesco Rotundi, who completed the ship with all its superstructures and sumptuous decorations in 1931. As one of the last great sailing ships, the Amérigo Vespucci is still in service as a training ship for the Italian Navy. The ship is named after the Florentine merchant Amerigo Vespucci who, in 1501, explored the coast of Brazil under the Portuguese flag on behalf of King Manuel. Later, the American continent was discovered.

Main characteristics of the Amérigo Vespucci :

The Amérigo Vespucci is a three-masted square-rigged vessel, which means it has three masts fitted with square sails. This traditional configuration is reminiscent of the sailing ships used during the great maritime explorations.

The boat was built in 1930 and launched in 1931. She quickly became a symbol of the Italian Navy and took part in numerous regattas and nautical parades around the world.

The Amérigo Vespucci is mainly used as a training ship for Italian naval officers. It offers practical, hands-on experience of sailing, enabling officer cadets to learn the skills needed to navigate traditional sailing ships.

The boat is renowned for its elegant hull and immaculate sails. Its classic appearance is reminiscent of historic sailing ships, making it a true ambassador of Italian maritime history.

The Amérigo Vespucci has sailed many seas and oceans around the world, taking part in international events, nautical parades and regattas. Her presence at these events helps to strengthen diplomatic and cultural ties between Italy and other countries.

In short, the Amérigo Vespucci is much more than just a ship; she embodies Italy's maritime heritage and perpetuates the traditions of sailing. Its beauty and its role as a training ship make it an important symbol of the Italian navy and of world maritime culture.
