In the early 1980s, the Marine Corps was looking for a new naval helicopter, so it tested the Boeing AH-64 Apache attack helicopter over a two-week period in September 1981, including shipboard trials. Several concepts were studied, but the request for funding for the AH-64 was rejected by Congress that same year. The Marines opted for a more powerful version of the AH-1T. Other modifications included modified fire control systems to carry and fire AIM-9 Sidewinder and AGM-114 Hellfire missiles. The new version, funded by Congress, received the designation AH-1W In March 1986, deliveries of the AH-1W SuperCobra began, for a total of 179 new helicopters and the modernization of 43 existing AH-1Ts.
