1775 corsair boat
\nDuring the War of Revolution (1774-76), some vessels were commanded by government rebel colonizers to rob British businesses everywhere, and to capture, when possible, British ships. At the time of the Revolution, Benjamin Franklin was ambassador to France. He obtained permission to buy two French corsairs through an important shipowner. These corsairs were the predecessors of the Baltimore schooners. They were painted in black to make them practically invisible during the night. They were baptized black prince and black princess. Their crews were Portuguese but the captain was American. They robbed English commercial ships in English coastal waters and for more than a year, they destroyed British trade with the whole world.
